Known as "The Summer White House" during the Truman presidency, the Harry S. Truman National Historic Site offers informative, docent-led tours of the house where Truman lived throughout his adulthood. The Victorian home, built in the late 19th century, is furnished with many of the furnishings and artifacts owned by the president, his wife Bess and their daughter Margaret, such as family portraits, Truman's expansive book collection and Margaret's baby grand piano. The home is located in Independence, eight miles east of downtown Kansas City and a short 30 minute drive from the historic Truman farm in Grandview.
Visitor Center open daily 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Guided tours offered daily 9:00 a.m. - 4:15 p.m.
Adults $4; Children 15 and under are free.
